Channing Tatum, Zoe Saldana Lead Voice Cast for Fox’s ‘The Book of Life’

Guillermo del Toro is producing the animated movie, which also features the voices of Ice Cube and Ron Perlman

Channing Tatum and Zoe Saldana will lend their voices to 20th Century Fox Animation and Reel FX Animation Studios’ animated comedy “The Book of Life,” the companies announced Wednesday.

Guillermo del Toro is producing the movie, which Jorge Gutierrez is directing from a script he wrote with Doug Langdale.

The rest of the voice cast includes Diego Luna, Christina Applegate, Ice Cube, Kate del Castillo and del Toro favorite Ron Perlman, as well as Cheech Marin, Danny Trejo, Hector Elizondo, Ana de la Reguera (“Nacho Libre”), Eugenio Derbez (“Instructions Not Included”), comedian Gabriel Iglesias, radio personality Ricardo “El Mandril” Sanchez and legendary tenor Placido Domingo.

An animated comedy with a unique visual style, “The Book of Life” follows the journey of Manolo, a young man who is torn between fulfilling the expectations of his family and following his heart. Before choosing which path to follow, he embarks on an incredible adventure that spans three fantastical worlds where he must face his greatest fears.

Rich with a fresh take on pop music favorites, “The Book of Life” encourages us to celebrate the past while looking forward to the future.

The film’s original score and songs are by two-time Oscar winner Gustavo Santaolalla (“Brokeback Mountain”), who is currently touring with the popular Argentine band Bajofondo.

“The Book of Life” is being overseen by Oscar winner Aron Warner (“Shrek”), who now serves as president of animation for Reel FX, and Brad Booker, who is producing with Aaron Berger and Carina Schulze. Vanessa Morrison, president of 20th Century Animation, and Elizabeth Reddy, VP of production at 20th Century Fox Animation, are supervising for the studio.

Fox will release “The Book of Life” on Oct. 17, 2014.
