Christian Bale is getting behind the wheel for director Michael Mann’s longtime passion project “Ferrari,” an insider with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

An adaptation of the book “Enzo Ferrari: The Man, the Cars, the Races, The Machine,” the film has been fast-tracked with Bale playing the famous racer and entrepreneur. Mann and Bale will seek financing on forthcoming festival circuit stops Toronto and Venice, the insider said.

The search is now underway for the female lead in the project, which is said to follow a harrowing year in Enzo’s life, 1957, when a Ferrari model crashed mid-race in Italy and killed nine pedestrians, five of them children.

Mann last helmed the Chris Hemsworth action  drama “Blackhat.” Bale will next be seen Adam McKay’s ensemble comedy “The Big Short,” co-starring Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, Selena Gomez and Steve Carell.
