CNN, Volkswagen Partner for Films Sponsorship

German automaker to be debut sponsor for CNN Films; first sponsored film is “Ivory Tower”

CNN has secured Volkswagen as its debut sponsor for “CNN Films,” the companies announced Wednesday.

The sponsorship will launch Nov. 20 with the documentary “Ivory Tower,” directed by Andrew Rossi. The doc looks at soaring college tuition costs.

Other upcoming documentaries sponsored by Volkswagen are “Dinosaur 13” in September — depicting a paleontologist’s journey to bring Tyrannosaurus Rex “Sue” to the world, and “Life Itself,” which tells the story of movie critic Roger Ebert.

As part of the sponsorship, Volkswagen will have extensive co-branding in the buildup to and during sponsored films. The Volkswagen logo will appear during the opening credits of films and during breaks. The sponsorship is set to last through the first three quarters of 2015, spanning through several upcoming CNN films.

“As our news formats and content evolve, and continue to be recognized with awards across the industry, so do our conversations with agencies and inspired brands like Volkswagen,’ said Katrina Cukaj, executive vice president, CNN Ad Sales. “This partnership aligns Volkswagen with superior storytelling that spans both linear and digital environments, while encouraging thought-provoking discussion across social channels.”
