CNN’s ‘New Day’ Calls Out ‘Fox & Friends’ for Laughing Reaction to Trump’s ‘Go Back’ Tweets: ‘Racism Is Not Funny’ (Video)

A Fox host said the president was feeling “very comedic” after his tweets, which have been widely condemned as racist

CNN’s “New Day” hosts on Monday called out Fox News’ “Fox & Friends Weekend” for the hosts’ laughter on Sunday when reading President Donald Trump’s tweets calling for four Democratic congresswomen of color to “go back” where they came from.

“Racism is not funny. It’s violent,” Maysoon Zayid, a writer and producer speaking on CNN’s panel, said after playing a clip from the Fox News show in which the Fox News hosts laughed while reading Trump’s Sunday tweets and Fox’s Jedediah Bila commented, “Someone’s feeling very comedic today!”

Zayid continued, “And also, it made me think, ‘Will they laugh if we get rounded up?’ How far away from that are we? Will they be chuckling, will they think it’s funny, do they realize  that this literally puts people in danger every single day, when they laugh and then they excuse it?”

CNN’s Alisyn Camerota, a former “Fox & Friends” host, also commented that for most Republicans, Fox News is “their sole source of information” and “that’s where they like to hear their own views reflected back at them.”

Trump received widespread backlash for his Sunday tweets about the four congresswomen — three of whom were born in the U.S. (the fourth, Rep. Ilhan Omar, is a Somali-born U.S. citizen) and suggesting that House Speaker Nancy Pelosi “would be very happy to quickly work out free travel arrangements!”

A rep for Fox News did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Bila herself responded after CNN’s Brian Stelter highlighted Bila’s “comedic” comment on Twitter. “Oh, Brian. You never disappoint. My ‘comedic’ comment was in response to the absurdity of the idea of Pelosi booking free travel arrangements. In fact, I had just finished saying that the women referenced are both strong & principled. As usual, thanks for being a loyal viewer.”
