Comcast announced on Wednesday that customers that use its updated Xfinity iPad application will now have the ability to stream hundreds of television shows and on-demand movies on the Apple tablet.
The move was expected. Brian Roberts, Comcast’s chairman and chief executive, announced plans for tablet streaming last month at Citi's Global Entertainment Media & Telecommunications Conference in Phoenix.
Programming and content from HBO, SHOWTIME, Starz, Encore, Cinemax, MoviePlex, TBS, TNT, Cartoon Network and BBC America can be accessed by Xfinity TV subscribers of those networks for free.
The company also announced that the app has been downloaded more than a million times since its November launch.
“We have an aggressive development plan to introduce even more features in the coming months that enable customers to more richly watch, control, and personalize their entertainment experience,” Comcast Interactive SVP and GM Matt Strauss said in announcing the updated app.
Comcast’s Xfinity TV app already functions as a television guide and remote control, allowing customers to can change TV channels, browse listings and program their DVRs.
