‘Nomadland,’ ‘The Crown’ Dominate Critics Choice Awards: Complete Winners List

Chadwick Boseman, Carey Mulligan, Daniel Kaluuya and Maria Bakalova win acting awards in the film categories, whose winners go on to win Oscars about 70% of the time

“Nomadland” and “The Crown” dominated the Critics Choice Awards on Sunday, with “Nomadland” scoring the Best Picture and Best Director awards and “The Crown” taking home awards for Best Drama Series, Best Actor, Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress in a Drama Series.

“Nomadland” also won awards for Best Cinematography and Best Adapted Screenplay to top all films with four wins. “Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom” won three awards, including Best Actor for Chadwick Boseman, while “Promising Young Woman” won two, including Best Actress for Carey Mulligan. “Minari” and “The Trial of the Chicago 7” also received two awards each, with the former film taking the Best Foreign-Language Film category and its young co-star Alan Kim winning in the Best Young Actor/Actress category and the latter winning for its ensemble cast and its editing (the latter category in a tie with “Sound of Metal”).

Supporting actor and actress awards went to Daniel Kaluuya for “Judas and the Black Messiah” and Maria Bakalova for “Borat Subsequent Moviefilm.”

In a way, the show reinforced what was already known — that “Nomadland” is the clear pick of the critics for the best movie of 2020 (or of the strange, elongated 2020 awards season that has extended into 2021, when “Nomadland” was actually released). The Searchlight drama’s string of wins, which now includes the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, makes it the closest thing to a true favorite in the Academy Awards race for Best Picture, though it’s important to note that the film professionals who vote for the Oscars and the critics and journalists who vote for the Globes and CCA are dramatically different groups of voters.

If there was a film that took a hit on Sunday night, it was probably Aaron Sorkin’s “The Trial of the Chicago 7,” which was considered a strong contender in the Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay categories but lost in the former to “Nomadland” and in the latter to “Promising Young Woman.” (The Netflix film’s wins for editing and ensemble acting were not bad consolation prizes, but it needs more than consolation prizes at this point in awards season.)

Over the last decade, about 70% of the Critics Choice winners have gone on to receive the Academy Award. The two shows have 18 categories in common, with the number of matching winners ranging from a high of 16 in 2014 and 2018 to a low of eight in 2015. Last year, 13 Critics Choice winners went on to receive Oscars, though two of those were from categories in which the CCA ended in a tie with two winners.

In the Best Picture category, Critics Choice and Oscar winners have matched five times in the last 10 years, though only once in the last four years.

In the television categories, which are chosen by a different group of members from the Critics Choice Association, voters reaffirmed the dominance of “The Crown,” suitably enough for a show that was airing opposite Oprah’s interview with Meghan Markle and Prince Harry. But in the comedy categories, the CCA opted not to reward the final season of “Schitt’s Creek” with the Best Comedy Series Award, for which it has been nominated three times without ever winning. Instead, newcomer “Ted Lasso” took that prize, and also divvied up the acting awards with “Schitt’s Creek.”

Overall, “Ted Lasso” received three awards,  with prizes for actors Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddington winning in addition to the Best Comedy Series award. “Schitt’s Creek” received two, for actors Catherine O’Hara and Daniel Levy.

The Critics Choice Awards took place in a virtual ceremony hosted by Taye Diggs, and were voted on by members of the Critics Choice Association, a group of more than 400 television, radio and internet critics and journalists.
