On Wednesday night’s “The Daily Show,” host Trevor Noah tackled the big news of the day — the mass walkout by students across the country to protest gun violence and the refusal by conservative lawmakers to do anything about it. But first, he had to take a moment to remember on Tuesday that in order to deal with some of Donald Trump’s ramblings that the show had needed a minute to parse.
“Sometimes Donald Trump does so much in a day we don’t have time to process it all at once,” Noah said. “So every now and again it’s nice to go back and look at the fun stuff that we missed.
The two items in question were Trump’s people putting up a wall to hide prototypes for the wall he wants to put on the border with Mexico, and his new obsession with space. “The Daily Show” played a clip of Trump giving a speech in which he proposed a so-called “space force,” an arm of the military for space, as well as trying to get everyone hype for a mission to Mars — which Trump said we would not be thinking about doing had his opponent beat him in the 2016 election.
“Yeah, you know what? I’m actually going to agree with him on this one. If Hillary had won the election, people would not be thinking about going to Mars,” Noah said, joking about how Trump is so terrible a president that people like to kid about fleeing the planet. “And it turns out, President Trump isn’t just worried about illegal aliens. He’s worried about real aliens, too.”
Then he played a clip in which Trump called outer space a “war-fighting domain,” and claimed that he initially suggested it as a joke but then his advisers said it was actually a great idea.
“Wait, wait. What? So the idea started as a joke, and now Trump decided to actually do it. I feel like this is exactly how he ran for president. ‘Wouldn’t it be funny if I rode down an escalator and said Mexicans are rapists? Actually, that’s a great idea. I’m doing that. I’m doing that.’ But seriously though, a space force. This guy is not even done with his wars on earth and he wants to start fighting in space. Like, he’s got the attention span of a five-year-old. ‘I want space!’ Someone needs to be like, ‘Finish your Afghanistan, and then you can have space, Donald.’”
