Just days after announcing it has greenlit new original live-action movie, “The Descendants,” Disney Channel has cast its first star.

Dove Cameron will join the production as Mal, the daughter of “Sleeping Beauty” villain Meleficent.

“Dove is a multidimensional actress whose undeniable charisma allows her to conjure the many facets of Mal, the sharp-edged yet vulnerable daughter of one of Disney’s most wicked villains,” Disney Channel’s senior vice president of casting and talent relations, Judy Taylor, said in a statement.

Cameron is best known for playing both title characters on Disney Channel series “Liv and Maddie.” She has also appeared on Showtime’s “Shameless,” CBS’s “The Mentalist” and ABC’s “Malibu Country.”

Cameron is featured on the holiday compilation album, “Disney Holidays Unwrapped,” which worked in the actress’s favor as she’ll have to sing in the role, as well.

Set to begin production next spring for a 2015 premiere, “Descendants” will introduce the teen offspring of its greatest villains. The children, though, are beginning to question the family business.

In addition to Maleficent, it will revisit characters from “Beauty and the Beast,” “101 Dalmations,” “Snow White,” “Aladdin,” “Cinderella,” “Rapunzel” and “Mulan.”

Emmy-winning director and choreographer of the cable channel’s “High School Musical” franchise, Kenny Ortega, has been tapped to direct. Casting is currently underway.

Josann McGibbon and Sara Parriott (“The Starter Wife,” “Runaway Bride,” “Desperate Housewives”). Mark Hofeling (“Teen Beach Movie,” “High School Musical”) will head production design. And Kara Saun (“Project Runway,” “America’s Best Dance Crew”) will oversee wardrobe design.
