Just six months before puling off an upset in the presidential election, Donald Trump celebrated Cinco de Mayo in 2016 as one might expect him to: with a big heap of self-promotion and a whopper of a claim.
The then GOP candidate fired up his Twitter account and posted a picture of himself chowing down on some Mexican food, along with the following message.
“Happy #CincoDeMayo! The best taco bowls are made in Trump Tower Grill. I love Hispanics!” Trump wrote.
The feeling might not be entirely mutual. In the nascent days of his presidential campaign, Trump stirred controversy by characterizing illegal immigrants from Mexico as rapists, and he called for a wall between Mexico and the U.S. — which he figures Mexico should pay for.
