“Empire” star Bryshere Gray was arrested on a traffic-related charge in Chicago, a representative for the Chicago Police Department told TheWrap on Monday.

Gray — who plays Hakeem, the younger brother of Jussie Smollett’s character, Jamal, on the Fox hip-hop drama — was pulled over by police last Thursday for a “registration issue” in which his license plate didn’t match the Rolls-Royce he was driving, the spokesperson told TheWrap.

According to the representative, the actor was not in possession of a driver’s license — though he told officers he does have one, but it was not on him at the time — and did not have insurance on the vehicle.

Gray was arrested on one misdemeanor registration charge and received two traffic citations, one for an uninsured motor vehicle and the other for failing to have a driver’s license.

He is no longer in custody, though the spokesperson was unable to tell TheWrap when Gray was released. His court date for the offense has been set for July 18.

A representative for Gray told TheWrap on Monday the incident was “all was a misunderstanding.”

Fox declined to comment.

Gray’s Chicago arrest comes several months after that of Smollett, who was charged with multiple counts of filing a false police report. Those charges were later dropped as part of a deal requiring him to perform community service and forfeit $10,000 bond.

TheWrap previously reported that Smollett had once been in preliminary talks to return to the show for the upcoming sixth and final season, but Daniels later denied it on Twitter, emphatically stating that Smollett would not return.
