Entertainment Litigators Leave Irell to Hang Up Shingle

Irell & Manella alums Kendall Brill & Klieger join in new venture.

Prominent attorneys Richard B. Kendall, Laura W. Brill, and Robert N. Klieger announce the formation of their new firm, Kendall Brill & Klieger LLP, effective today.

Kendall Brill & Klieger focuses on diverse areas of complex civil litigation and appellate matters, including intellectual property, entertainment, complex contract, commercial, and constitutional litigation.

Launching a new firm will enable these attorneys to put their experience, talents, and values together.

"A small firm will allow us to develop a practice that is a direct reflection of our personal and professional priorities," said founding partner Richard B. Kendall.  "These include excellence in advocacy, participatory governance, flexible billing arrangements aligned with client objectives, a strong commitment to public service, and ensuring meaningful work and career development opportunities for junior attorneys who join us," Mr. Kendall said.

Among other things, the firm has pledged to institute a form of profit sharing for all attorneys after its first year in operation.  "We’re hoping to build an institution in which all concerned will feel a sense of ownership," said founding partner, Laura W. Brill.

Kendall Brill & Klieger will maintain a strong relationship with Irell & Manella, and the partners praise their former firm as a strong-hold of excellence in Los Angeles.  "We all have enormous respect, admiration, and appreciation for Irell, and we expect that our close relationships will continue in the future," said KBK founding partner Robert N. Klieger.

All three partners have a record of accomplishment representing sophisticated clients in high-profile complex litigation and appeals and are dedicated to combining that work with an ongoing commitment to public interest representation.  Richard Kendall has been honored by the Century City Bar Association as its "Litigator of the Year" and has been repeatedly recognized as a leading media and litigation lawyer by Chambers & Partners.  He has also garnered numerous awards for pro bono advocacy on behalf of the NRDC and other environmental groups.  Laura Brill, a former law clerk to Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg, is a recipient of People for the American Way Foundation’s prestigious Defenders of Democracy award and has been recognized as one of the top 100 women litigators in California by the Daily Journal.  Robert Klieger has been named by Los Angeles Magazine to its Southern California "Super Lawyers" list for five consecutive years.

"We are delighted by this announcement," said Michael Fricklas, General Counsel of Viacom Inc.  "The Kendall Brill & Klieger team have represented our companies, including Paramount Pictures and MTV Networks, for many years.  They are among the best lawyers in the country.  Their results in the trial and appellate courts have been nothing short of extraordinary.  A small firm of enormously talented lawyers fits our needs perfectly," he said.  Jonathan Anschell, General Counsel of CBS Television, had similar praise.  "CBS Television, like other CBS operating divisions, has worked closely with this trio for many years, and their results in small and large disputes have been outstanding.  They bring an unusual blend of excellent brief-writing and toughminded trial skills to every case."
