Syfy has acquired “Van Helsing,” a 13-episode series about the daughter of the famous vampire hunter, TheWrap has learned.

Neil LaBute will serve as the showrunner and writer of the new drama, which is set to begin production in Vancouver in January.

The series follows Vanessa Helsing, daughter of Dracula’s foe Abraham Van Helsing. Vanessa is resurrected in a future in which vampires rule the world. She leads the human resistance in a fight against the vampires to retake the Earth.

“I am extremely excited to be working with Syfy and Nomadic Pictures to create a unique, character-driven action series that will move the traditional vampire tropes into bold and unexpected new territories” LaBute said. “This is a wonderful chance for us to forge great stories and unforgettable characters and throw them into a world where the stakes – both dramatic and personal – are tremendously high.”

Chad Oakes and Mike Frislev from Nomadic Pictures are executive producing along with LaBute, Simon Barry, Evan Tyler, Dave Brown, and Daniel March.

Hugh Jackman previously portrayed Van Helsing in the poorly-received 2004 movie of the same name. Anthony Hopkins also played the character in Francis Ford Coppola‘s reimagining of “Dracula” in 1992.
