Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer are totally transformed in the first photo released from HBO’s “The Wizard of Lies,” as the veteran actors take on the roles of Bernie and Ruth Madoff, respectively.

“The Wizard of Lies” is currently in production in New York City under the direction of Barry Levinson, and chronicles the massive Ponzi scheme perpetrated by Madoff that had devastating effects for both his victims and his own family.

Alessandro Nivola and Hank Azaria also star.

Levinson also serves as executive producer along with De Niro, Jane Rosenthal and Berry Welsh. Jason Sosnoff co-executive produces.

The film was written by John Burnham Schwartz, Sam Baum and Sam Levinson, based on the book “The Wizard of Lies” by Diana Henriques, with “Truth and Consequences” by Laurie Sandell as additional source material.
