First Look: Hilary Swank’s ‘Conviction’

True story finds “Boys Don’t Cry” star playing working-class lawyer

Hilary Swank’s latest awards bid, “Conviction,” finds the “Million Dollar Baby” star playing a real-life working-class woman who put herself through law school so she could defend her brother against a murder conviction. The supporting cast is enticing, boasting the likes of Sam Rockwell and Melissa Leo, but the trailer, with its flat color scheme and calculated moments of moral indignation, smacks of a TV movie-of-the-week. The film hits theaters Oct. 15.
