‘Game of Thrones’: Khal Drogo Channels Howard Dean (Video)

Jason Momoa’s brutish HBO character’s gung-ho speech reminds us of a memorable 2004 political moment

Is it just us, or does a recent scene from "Game of Thrones" seem improbably familiar?

Re-watching "You Win or Die," the HBO series' seventh episode recently, we came to the (entirely drug-free, promise!) conclusion that hulking actor Jason Momoa must have taken notes while preparing to recite Khal Drogo's war-mongering motivational speech from a very unlikely source: former Democratic presidential candidate Howard Dean.

Please bear with us while we make this questionable point!

Yes, Momoa/Drogo has chunks of guys like Howard Dean in his stomach acid, but we think the similarities between the "Game of Thrones" scene and the Vermont doctor's off-putting screech after getting plunked in the 2004 Iowa caucus are as clear as they are eerie.

Before we continue, let's take a walk down memory lane and watch the hilarious speech that tarnished Dean's chances to compete with rivals John Kerry and John Edwards.

After his Iowa defeat, Howard Dean notoriously made a series of promises to his supporters that he couldn't keep.

"Not only are we going to New Hampshire," said Dean, "we're going to South Carolina and Oklahoma and Arizona and North Dakota and New Mexico! We're going to California and Texas and New York! We're going to San Diego and Oregon and Washington and Michigan! And then we're going to Washington D.C. to take back the White House!"

He followed this rant up with an amazing, high-pitched scream: "Yeaaaaaaahhhh!"

Well, at the end of episode seven, Drogo, leader of the Dothraki horde, launches into his own, overly excited tirade, full of bold proclamations that will likely never come true.

"I will take my Khalasar west to where the world ends and ride woden horses across the black salt water as no Khal has done before!" growls the tattooed horselord Drogo, growing more and more emphatic with every phrase. "I will kill the men in iron suits and tear down their stone houses! I will rape their women and take their children as slaves and bring their broken gods back to Vaes Dothrak!"

Drogo — last seen in episode nine clinging to life after being felled by a festering battle wound — even caps it off his speech with an emphatic scream.
