‘Gravity’ Rockets to Another $36 Million, Stays No. 1 at Overseas Box Office

A nearly $12 million No. 1 debut in France helps push worldwide total for Warner Bros.’ 3D space epic to $365 million

“Gravity” may have dropped from the top spot at the domestic box office, but it’s still in the stratosphere overseas.

The Sandra Bullock-George Clooney space epic brought in $36.6 million from 54 territories in its fourth weekend abroad, and now has taken in $164 million overseas and nearly $365 million worldwide. Nearly 75 percent of the grosses have come from 3D, according to distributor Warner Bros.

A huge showing in France drove this weekend’s tally. “Gravity” took in $11.8 million – 95 percent from 3D – to finish No. 1 there. It had strong second-week showings in South Korea ($5.8 million) and Mexico ($4 million), and stayed on top in both markets.

Russia, with $19 million total, has been the biggest foreign market so far, but it has several key territories to go, including the U.K. (Nov. 8), China (Nov. 20) and Japan (Dec 18).

Two animated films were second and third overseas. Sony’s “Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2” rang up $`17.9 million, giving it $150 million globally. Fox’s “Turbo” brought in $14.2 million to up its worldwide total to $247 million.

Sony’s “Captain Phillips” generated $12.1 million from 23 foreign markets and should cross $100 million globally on Monday.
