Hannibal Buress Says Praise for Popularizing Bill Cosby Scandal ‘Is Conflicting’

“People think I’m like this amazing guy or something. I’m a decent guy,” the Comedy Central star says

Hannibal Buress did not set out to turn the world against once-adored sitcom star Bill Cosby, but a viral bit from a stand-up set helped light the fire that has forever changed the way people look at the “Cosby Show” patriarch.

“You can’t predict shit like that,” Buress says in a new GQ interview, in which he shrugs off the idea that he’s a “feminist hero” for bringing allegations against Cosby to the general public’s attention.

“People are going to put on you whatever they want to put on you,” he said in a new interview with GQ. “It is conflicting, because people think I’m like this amazing guy or something. I’m a decent guy.”

Buress also revealed that the attention he got after a recording of his Bill Cosby stand up bit leaked online, it caused Comedy Central to halt the announcement of his new show, “Why? With Hanniball Buress.” The network wanted to wait until the media stopped associating Buress’ name with Cosby’s, but that day has yet to come.

When the show was finally announced, Buress said people sent him messages insulting him for selling out Cosby in order to get his own show. “This deal closed, like, June of last year,” Buress said. “That person can’t be argued with.”

Buress also spoke about his time writing for “Saturday Night Live,” saying, “It wasn’t for me. I didn’t apply myself as much as I could’ve. Maybe I didn’t enjoy the place that much.”

Buress also spent time writing for the NBC sitcom “30 Rock.” “’30 Rock’ I enjoyed,” he said. “They’d probably say nice things about me, but they won’t say that I was a great sitcom writer”
