Lorene Scafaria and STX are working on developing a stage musical based on this year’s blockbuster “Hustlers,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

Scafaria first told Variety on the red carpet of the Golden Globes that she was “trying” and “just starting” to adapt her film to the stage.

“I said it to them a few months ago that I thought it would be a good idea, that’s all. Who knows,” Scafaria said. “I’m trying to develop it for the stage.”

In terms of the music for the stage production, Scafaria said it could be a mix of old and new music, but jokingly said it would “depend on what Usher lets us do.” The hip-hop star made a cameo in “Hustlers,” but it’s not clear if he’s genuinely involved in the stage production.

Scafaria also felt that any musical would be appropriate for wide audiences and virtually all ages.

“We had a lot of different kinds of people turning out for ‘Hustlers,’ it was a wider net than I imagined,” she said. “I think it’s a safe space for people to enjoy something that maybe they wouldn’t enjoy, and maybe they’ll get inspired to go to an actual strip club and support the girls.”

“Hustlers” star Jennifer Lopez told Extra last month at the Gotham Awards that she would be open to the idea of a stage musical, even though she would be more likely to produce it than star in it.

“It really lends itself to a Broadway show, and to a live-performance show,” Lopez said. “I don’t know that I would do it. I would produce it, for sure. I don’t know. Maybe. You never know with me.”
