Former vice president Joe Biden shared an emotional moment with Meghan McCain on “The View” Wednesday. McCain told Biden that she couldn’t get through the part of his book, “Promise Me, Dad: A Year of Hope, Hardship, and Purpose,” which covered his son, Beau Biden’s, struggle with brain cancer.
McCain’s father, Sen. John McCain, was diagnosed with the same form of brain cancer six months ago.
“I think about Beau almost every day and I was told — sorry — that this doesn’t get easier but that you cultivate the tools to work with this and live with this,” said the younger McCain breaking down on air.
Biden moved to sit next to McCain and offer words of encouragement and joke about his long relationship with Sen. McCain.
“Her dad goes after me hammer and tongs. We were like two brothers who somehow were somehow raised by different fathers or something because of our points of view,” Biden reminisced. “I mean this sincerely, I know that if I picked up the phone tonight and called John McCain and said ‘John, I’m at Second and Vine in Oshkosh and I need your help. Come.’ He would and I would for him too.”
“One of the things that gave Beau courage … was John,” Biden added. “Your dad took care of my Beau … became friends with Beau. Beau talked about your dad’s courage. Not about illness, but about his courage.”
Since leaving office, Biden has pursued many projects including the Biden Cancer Initiative to “develop and drive implementation of solutions to accelerate progress in cancer prevention, detection, diagnosis, research, and care, and to reduce disparities in cancer outcomes.”
He currently serves as co-chair of the initiative along with his wife Dr. Jill Biden.
