The 20-year-old Canadian pop star elicited a mixture of cheers and jeers from the audience attending Canada’s Juno Awards in Winnipeg on Sunday when it was announced that he beat out Drake, Arcade Fire, Michael Buble and six other acts for the Juno Fan Choice Award.
Canada’s Olympic women’s curling team accepted the award on his behalf, since Bieber wasn’t in attendance.
Obviously, the singer still has plenty of hometown support since this is the fourth year in a row he has been declared Canada’s fan choice, and one of the nominees he beat even stuck up for him in front of the raucous crowd.
“I really think that Justin Bieber is an amazing musician and he deserved every bit of that award because he’s been working his ass off his entire life and we need to support how awesome he is,” Ryder said. “I think he’s great. I’m not just trying to kiss ass.”
Sure. Bieber’s pet.
