Adam Cozad, who penned the script for “The Legend of Tarzan,” is in negotiations to write the screenplay for “Suicide Squad 2,” an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.

No director is currently attached to the Warner Bros. sequel, although Mel Gibson is reportedly being courted by the studio. David Ayer, who wrote and directed the 2016 movie, will not return for the sequel. Instead, he is working on “Gotham City Sirens,” a movie featuring several of DC’s highest-profile female villains, that will reunite him with Margot Robbie as Harley Quinn.

“Suicide Squad” starred Will Smith, Robbie and Jared Leto and was widely panned by critics and fans, but earned $745 million at the worldwide box office.

It told the story of DC villains that included Deadshot, Harley Quinn, the Joker, Captain Boomerang and Killer Croc, who were forced to work together to help the government.

Cozad also co-wrote 2014’s “Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit,” which starred Chris Pine. “Legend of Tarzan,” which starred Alexander Skarsgard and Robbie, opened last year and earned $356 million worldwide. However, it received lukewarm reviews. Currently, it holds a score of 36 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Cozad is represented by ICM Partners, the Gotham Group, and Weintraub Tobin.
