Kristen Stewart, Chloe Sevigny Take on Infamous Ax Murders in ‘Lizzie’ Trailer (Video)

Drama premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January

Roadside Attractions and Saban Films have released the first official trailer for the buzzy Sundance drama “Lizzie,” based on the infamous Lizzie Borden ax murders.

“Lizzie” stars Chloe Sevigny as Lizzie Borden, who was tried and acquitted for the 1892 ax murders of her father and stepmother. The film also stars Kristen Stewart, who plays a servant hired by Borden’s family. There is an intense lust and desire between the two women that culminates in the graphic and extremely violent, infamous murders. Denis O’Hare also stars in the film, which Craig Macneill directed.

“This is America, sir,” says Lizzie when asked whether he father had any enemies. “Every man with a pulse has enemies.”

The film premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January to good reviews. On Rotten Tomatoes, the film currently holds a score of 70 percent, with many critics praising the chemistry between Sevigny and Stewart.

Aug. 4 marks the 126th anniversary of the murders that took place in Fall River, Massachusetts.

“Lizzie” will hit theaters on Sept. 14.
