The musical "Matilda" claimed a record-breaking seven prizes at the 2012 Laurence Olivier Awards Sunday in London, including best new musical.
Among the honors were one for best actress in a musical, presented jointly to the four young girls — "the little twerps," as the show's songwriter and lyricist Tim Minchin called them — who share the title role.

One of the four best actress winners, 10-year-old Eleanor Worthington-Cox, became the youngest Olivier winner ever. She was joined on stage by Cleo Demetriou, Kerry Ingram and Sophia Kiely.
The seven wins by "Matilda" beat by one the mark set in 1980 by "Nicholas Nickleby," also a Royal Shakespeare Company production. "Matilda," based on the novel of the same name by Roald Dahl. It is heading for Broadway next year.
Other "Matilda" winners included Bertie Carvel as best actor in a musical, Matthew Warchus for best direction, Rob Howell for the set, Peter Darling for choreography and Simon Baker for sound.
Benedict Cumberbatch and Jonny Lee Miller shared best actor in a play for their dual performances in Danny Boyle's staging of "Frankenstein."
Ruth Wilson was named best actress for the title role in "Anna Christie," a Donmar Warehouse production that was named best revival.
Named after theatrical giant Lord Olivier and first held in 1976, the awards are presented annually by the Society of London Theatre.
