Break Media, the online publisher and distributor of male lifestyle content, is teaming with veteran Hollywood producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura (“Transformers”) on a sci-fi feature film called “Higher Power.”
Scripted by Julia Fair (whose got several Syfy-ish writing credits on her IMDB profile), “Higher Power” follows a character named Joe, a man who wakes up in an alley to discover his life is under the control of a brilliant psychopath bent on domination and revenge. Per the announcement, the story “explores what happens when an ‘Average Joe’ is given the uncontrollable power of God.”
The film will be shot from the point of view of surveillance cameras, drones, and first-person footage. Hollywood VFX artist Matthew Santoro (“The Incredible Hulk,” “300”) is on board to direct. Deborah Aquila is casting the project, which is scheduled to begin production in July.
di Bonaventura and Greg Siegel, senior VP of entertainment development at Break Media, will produce alongside Evan Cholfin, a filmmaker and creative producer at Break Media.
“The move into producing long-form premium content significantly expands our capabilities as a media company and allows us broader options for different distribution models,” said Siegel in a statement. To that end, “Higher Power” will have a couple of different distribution models, including being released in “chapterized” segments online as well as in its full-length feature format across traditional media platforms (by which, we presume they mean television, video on-demand and electronic sell-through).
This may not have the level of stature of Machinima’s deal with RSA to produce a bunch of new sci-fi online video projects, some of which may develop into feature film franchises, but di Bonaventura’s credits are impressive in the number of big screen hits he has been a part of. The hope is that with “Higher Power,” his success will extend to the world of online video.
