It’s no secret — YouTube currently lays claim to over one billion monthly unique visitors — a number that justifies ownership of three in-house production studios, the newest of which is YouTube Space Tokyo. UK and LA production studios have been chugging along, and all signs point to a potential office in New York City, which we heard murmurs of earlier this year.
But there’s another player following suit on physical expansion globally.
Dailymotion, which likes to refer to itself as the second-biggest video platform in the world, has also been making investments in original online video to reach its 112 million monthly unique visitors. Earlier this spring, the company announced that their 600-square-meter production studio in Paris would begin production this month in an effort to bulk its original content output. Quite a competitive strategy to YouTube’s own original content “studio” development.
Noting that professionally produced content garners more viewers than home videos, Dailymotion has obviously taken the hint. The development of an original content studio internationally, may also signal room for expansion into the U.S. 20% of Dailymotion’s content consumption coming from the US already so it would make sense. Could a new production studio in New York or Los Angeles emerge to compete with YouTube Space LA?
The likely shot, and perhaps best opportunity, would be to get a foothold in New York City before YouTube has the chance. We’ll certainly keep our ears to the ground on this one!
