Apple has released a handful of new apps for Apple TV, including those for Disney, The Smithsonian Channel, The Weather Channel, and VEVO.
The VEVO app, which has been rumored for quite some time, will offer access to the full VEVO service. Previously, some reports indicated that VEVO was planning on making its 24/7 VEVO TV “channel” available on Apple TV. The just-released VEVO app includes the linear channel, which streams music videos, VEVO originals, and live concert events in scheduled blocks. But it also features VEVO’s complete library of 75,000+ music videos, original programs, and live concert content for viewers to watch on demand. VEVO says the app was specifically designed for Apple TV (not all that surprising), and features videos in HD quality. The app is available in 12 countries, and marks the first time VEVO TV is available outside the US and Canada.
As for the other apps — two from Disney, one from Smithsonian Channel, and one from The Weather Channel — are more of the TV Everywhere variety. The Disney apps offers on-demand content as well as access to a live-stream of Disney’s linear programming. The Smithsonian Channel and The Weather Channel apps also offer on-demand content. These apps require users to authenticate their pay-TV subscription to a participating operator in order to watch the TV programming. Per All Things D, The Weather Channel app will offer a live feed of its TV programming in some special cases, such as weather emergencies.
