Yahoo is finally jumping into the mobile video world with the announcement of a brand new Yahoo Screen app for iPhone, iPad, and iPod Touch.
The mobile application is launching in tandem with Yahoo’s fall original comedy programming slate, which includes shows from or starring actors like Jack Black, Ed Helms, and John Stamos. Adopting what many like to refer to as the “the Netflix model,” Yahoo is releasing every episode of all of its originals at once, making it possible for viewers to binge on the content.
In addition to Yahoo’s originals, the Yahoo Screen app will also offer licensed clips of “SNL,” and thanks to a new deal with Viacom, clips from “The Daily Show” and “The Colbert Report.”
Overall, more than 1,000 hours of comedy content and 5,000 clips are available today on Yahoo Screen. The content will be categorized by interest-based channels like Popular, Comedy, Food, Celebrity, Gaming, and Sports.
Yahoo’s head of video Erin McPherson has previously said the company likes to greenlight content based on the type of consumption Yahoo is seeing across its properties. In the case of Yahoo’s video strategy, it’s clear that there seems to be a strong appetite for funny content among Yahoo’s audience. So it makes a great deal of sense that the company would look to pick up comedy staples such as “SNL,” “The Daily Show,” and “The Colbert Report.” Clips from these shows are traditionally not only highly shareable, but would bring in an audience that Yahoo can then promote their originals to.
Yahoo plans to launch clips from additional Viacom-owned shows, including “South Park,” in October.
Battery brand Energizer has signed on to be the presenting sponsor for the Ed Helms-starring “Tiny Commando.” Per the ad deal, the Energizer brand will appear throughout the show, from Energizer batteries powering Tiny Commando cars to actual appearances of the Energizer Bunny.
