Two weeks before it’s set to hit theaters, “We Are Young,” a feature-length film from Funny or Die director/producer Alex Richanbach, will debut exclusively on the comedy site he works for.
“We Are Young,” which follows two young friends as they navigate LA’s murky dating scene, is a passion-project for Richanbach, who wrote, directed, produced, and stars in the film.
As the story goes, Richanbach used his graduate school savings to make “We Are Young.” After working as a production assistant on films like “Step Brothers” and “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button,” Richanbach used the self-funded film to get a job as a writer/director/producer at Funny or Die.
During his time at Funny or Die, Richanbach has directed several videos, including “Frenemies,” starring Eliza Coupe and Lauryn Kahn, and “Vibe for Women,” starring Analeigh Tipton. He has also produced many of the site’s political videos.
The story is now coming full circle as Funny or Die is helping Richanbach publicize the film before its theatrical release.
While many independent films have recently adopted an early VOD release model in hopes of building groundswell interest around a particular project, few (if any) are free-to-view like “We Are Young.” Few, if any, also have a partnership with a big-name online portal like Funny or Die. It’ll be interesting to see, though, how this free/advance-released model will help or hinder ticket sales. The film already has over 3,500 views at Funny or Die since its release this morning.
After its two-week stint on Funny or Die, “We Are Young” will be released to select theaters in LA, NY, Denver, Seattle, Ann Arbor, Oakland, Lubbock and Eugene. For more information on the film and its theatrical release dates, you can check out its website here.
The film also stars Drew Brooks and Dana May Salah, and is produced by Josh Church, Lindsay Burton, Josh Salzberg, and Richanbach.
