Comedy video website Funny or Die is producing a brand new late-night comedy show for Comedy Central titled “@midnight.” Appropriate on two counts, the show will air daily at 12:00 am and pit comedians against one another as they attempt to deliver the best jokes built around that day’s social media chatter.
“@midnight” will be hosted by comedy veteran Chris Hardwick who is no stranger to the world of social media. Hardwick is the creator of Nerdist, a smash hit podcast and YouTube channel. The show’s production credits read like some sort of comedy MVP roster with “Reno 911’s” Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant taking on co-executive producer roles in addition to Hardwick, Mike Farah, Jack Martin, and just about every other person working in the LA comedy scene.
Since launching in 2007, Funny or Die has broken free from only distributing digital content multiple times, starting with the creation of “Funny or Die Presents” for HBO in 2008. Earlier this year, Derek Water’s popular web series “Drunk History,” which began on the site, was developed into a half-hour TV show for Comedy Central.
Funny or Die also hosts feature length content, including “We Are Young,” a project created by one of the site’s contributing directors Alex Richanbach. That film is being exclusively made available on Funny or Die for a period of two weeks before its theatrical release.
It’s fascinating to see that among most types of digital content, comedy-themed creators and projects seem to have the easiest time making the transition to cable. Although not attached to Funny or Die, the majority of “SNL’s” new cast members have had some sort of notable presence online. In fact, digital comedy network Above Average has nurtured two of the new cast members into cable stardom. Although, it should be noted that many established comedians are, in fact, moving more towards digital in the hopes of finding new homes for their stuff, some of which can be less-than-friendly for cable — like Ricky Gervais’ newest Netflix original comedy “Derek.”
