‘I Am Unstoppable’: A Web Series Not Meant for the Web

“I Am Unstoppable” came loaded with some pretty big names. Launched by Weather Films, the original programming branch of The Weather Channel, in tandem with Emmy-winning “60 Minutes” producer Shawn Efran, “I Am Unstoppable” came out firing on all cylinders.
Luckily, the six-part web series lives up the the hype. Detailing stories of world class athletes who have overcome extraordinary obstacles, “I Am Unstoppable” is well-made and ultimately moving.
Each episode plays out with individuals telling his/her story of triumph over adversity. The setup is relatively simple, but that’s for a reason. Instead of bombarding viewers with detailed cinematography or complex editing, “I Am Unstoppable” points its lens solely at the subject of each story. The meat of this show are the stories of the athletes, so why wouldn’t it focus on those?
With story playing such a pivotal role in each episode, “I Am Unstoppable” does, at points, become slightly tedious when viewed as a whole. Visual elements take a backseat to the series, which leads one to wonder why these were not simple released as radio stories. In the context of the web, visual elements must share equal importance with the stories being told. When packaged as easily watchable content, attention spans must be constantly refreshed in the way that has become all-too-common with most web series. I’m not saying this is right, but it is the way things are done with a content-fickle, ADD-prone generation doing the majority of web viewing.
“I Am Unstoppable” is a terrifically composed web show. It hits all the right spots when it comes to telling an inspiring story of perseverance: Adversity? Yep. Bravery? You got it. Overcoming one’s fears? In spades.
These elements as a whole make up a wonderfully touching piece of web video. However, with six back-to-back versions containing more or less the same elements, “I Am Unstoppable” does fall flat in terms of keeping someone glued to the screen.
