Featuring popular YouTubers Chester See, Taryn Southern, Meghan Rosette, Vincent Cyr, and more, “Side Effects” twists the incredibly popular cover-song genre and spins it into a TV-length narrative drama.
The show follows 16-year-old Whitney Connolly (Meg DeLacy) who has been prescribed medication that causes her to see musical hallucinations. The dramatic aspects of the show’s narrative will come into play as Connolly faces life after her father’s departure in the wake of her mother’s death.
It sounds pretty heavy, but “Side Effects” aims to tap into the teen crowd that makes up the majority of AwesomenessTV’s core audience. While it does carry dramatic themes, the overall video plays out more like one big music video and less like an episode of “Melrose Place.”
Of course, this wouldn’t be a musical drama without music; Universal Music Group is distributing the soundtrack, which features pop singles like the David Guetta track “Titanium” and Pink’s “Try.”
UCP will be handling off-YouTube distribution as well, releasing “Side Effects” in different windows across international territories and VOD services. UCP’s previous foray into YouTube content was the sci-fi web series “Battlestar Galactica: Blood and Chrome,” which aired on Machinima and received over 8 million views
Executive producers for “Side Effects” are Brian Robbins, Joe Davola, Shauna Phelan, Chester See, and “Side Effects” writer Allison Schroeder. Grammy nominated director Matt Stawski helmed the project.
