Above Average, the YouTube comedy network owned by Lorne Michaels’ Broadway Video, has access to a diverse comedy community in New York City. With that in mind, the network has made it a goal to work with independent comedy creators in the city, giving them a platform to reach a wider audience online.
Here’s another series, launching today on the main Above Average YouTube channel, that comes from this community: “Podtoons,” an animated series that’s based on podcasts from the sketch comedy group Left Handed Radio.
The conceit is simple, Above Average takes individual bits from the podcast and animates them into individual episodes. For example, the first episode, which you can watch below, is about how terrible of a liar Batman/Bruce Wayne is.
So far, four episodes have been planned, set to roll out between now and the end of the year. The second episode, which will be titled “Gastric Bypass,” will premiere on November 13. The remaining two are still in development.
“Podtoons” is produced by Above Average and Left Handed Radio, and executive produced by the sketch group’s Anna Rubanova. It features the voices of Dan Chamberlain, Rubanova, Matt Little, and Brett White, and is animated by Rich Chapple.
