Mondo Media is headed to the Great White North in order to find its next hit show.
Partnering with Blue Ant Media, Mondo is spending $3 million to turn 30 Canadian writers’ pitches into 2–2.5 minute pilots, which will air on Mondo’s YouTube channel. The show that receives the highest praise from audiences will then be turned into Mondo’s next series.
Currently, Mondo Media hosts a variety of animated series at its YouTube channel, including “Happy Tree Friends,” and “Dick Figures,” which launched a full-length film recently on iTunes and VOD platforms. “Happy Tree Friends” is also cited as being one the first web “viral phenomenon” after debuting online in 2000.
According to Blue Ant CEO, Raja Khanna, YouTube is the ideal place to test out shows based on audience interaction. By gauging data gathered via YouTube, Blue Ant and Mondo will be able to determine what already works with audiences on a pilot-by-pilot basis.
Blue Ant will also air pilots on the Bite TV comedy channel. The speciality channel currently syndicates exclusively in Canada to roughly 2.8 million households.
The partnership, which is titled “Bite on Mondo,” is financed by the Canadian Media Fund. Mondo and Blue Ant are currently accepting submissions at the Mondo web site.
