NY-based video discovery startup Shelby.TV is relaunching its iOS app roughly 16 months after shutting the old product down.
Having spoken with Shelby.TV CEO Reece Pacheco at various points in the past few months, he has said the decision to shut the old Shelby.TV experience down was due to his team not wanting to continue trying to improve a product that were not happy with. Instead, they shuttered the product, put their heads down and got to work on a new and improved service, which ideally would go toward making it easier for users to discover the stuff they’re likely to enjoy watching.
The new Shelby.TV iOS app offers a channelized viewing experience via a continuous stream of videos you’re likely to watch, based on a variety of factors. Some of these are incredibly practical — the app offers videos from publishers that users choose to follow as well as videos that were shared by their friends on Facebook and Twitter.
The third factor is similar to what you hear from other video discovery companies — Shelby.TV touts its Video Graph technology, which will offer personalized recommendations to users. To make this possible, Shelby.TV will track app-usage patterns and sharing behaviors. When users link a video, Shelby.TV says it will be able to add it to its growing catalog of 33 million videos.
The goal is to also offer a seamless viewing experience, which makes sense if your form of video discovery is to offer a channel of neverending video content. To that end, Shelby.TV says the new app was specifically designed for iOS 7. For instance, it uses the operating system’s background fetching capability to make sure a video is ready for users to watch at any given time.
The new app also supports dual-screening via AirPlay. Users will be able to scan the Shelby.TV stream on their iPhone while watching new videos on the TV.
Shelby.TV’s video library pulls from three of the most popular free video platforms — YouTube, Dailymotion, and Vimeo.
