It has been a significant year for Dailymotion. After Yahoo’s attempt to buy the video site was squashed by the French government earlier this year, French telecommunications firm Orange SA reinvested almost $40 million into Dailymotion in an effort to expand its sales force. On the tail end of the investment, it was reported that the site had acquired an unnamed European technology provider who would help the video platform expand to international markets. Two months later, Dailymotion announced that it had acquired Swiss tech provider Jilion and would begin implementing the company’s SublimeVideo player into the platform.
All of this is to say that Dailymotion, despite living in YouTube’s shadow, is a serious player in the web video space. It’s got a large audience, reaching 120 unique monthly visitors.
And this audience has helped create some breakout viral hits on the platform. These are videos that found a home at Dailymotion and brought in crowds by the millions. Dailymotion has curated those uploads as part of its top “20 for 2013” video list. Of course, the hit videos we all expected to be there are present, but there’s also some pretty great dark horses in the mix as well. Check them out below.
