Before we go any further, let’s all acknowledge that it’s two days before New Year’s Day and we are still very much in the midst of a week-long news shutdown (at least in our industry).
As you keep that in the back of your mind, also know that according to a recent survey of US internet users conducted by Netflix, more than 50% of respondents are “willing to exercise” while binge watching. That is, of course, instead of sitting on the couch like most normal people do. This is a serious study.
In fact, the survey also found that 45% of respondents would be more motivated to exercise if they had on-demand and commercial-free access to their favorite films and TV shows.
So what Netflix is really saying to you, content owners, is that maybe you should think about striking more licensing deals with Netflix. Maybe you shouldn’t let all of those movies and TV shows expire on January 1. It would be the responsible thing to do. This is a serious study.
Among the other findings, sitcoms are the most popular content type for those trying to exercise while watching something they enjoy, with 36% of respondents choosing them over serialized dramas (27%), sci-fi/fantasy (24%), or reality shows (20%).
This is a serious study. It surveyed more than 1,000 respondents using the Google Consumers Survey publisher network. And it’s timed to the one time of the year when everyone pretends they’re going to work out more. So there you have it.
