Dublin-based social video news startup Storyful, which was acquired by News Corp in December 2013, has announced a deal with ABC News to help the news branch find and verify user-generated news videos for on-air and online broadcasts.
If you’re not familiar with Storyful, the startup uses a proprietary technology that canvasses the social web to find user-generated clips related to the top news stories of the day. It then verifies that these videos and photos are coming from the person/people who posted it, offering news organizations on-the-ground content that they might not otherwise have access to. This can be especially handy during major world events.
With the ABC News editorial partnership, ABC News will continue to use Storyful’s Newswire to source and verity new content that it uncovers across social media platforms like YouTube, Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
“Video shared on social media networks continue to be of increasing importance to the news industry,” says Storyful CEO Mark Little. “2014 is going to be a huge year for news organizations who can harness the power of video on the social and mobile web.”
ABC News Digital properties include ABCNews.com and GoodMorningAmerica.com, as well as ABC News apps for iOS, Android, and Windows 8 devices.
