René Rechtman has been appointed by Maker Studios to the newly created role of president of international. He joins the MCN from AOL, where he was CEO of AOL Be On, the branded entertainment division of AOL Networks.
At Maker Studios, Rechtman will be responsible for leading the company’s international growth strategy, overseeing the development of strategic partner relationships, and building a syndicated business. He will report directly to Maker Studios executive chairman Ynon Kreiz.
Last fall, Maker completed a $26 million Series C round, which was led by international investors and media companies like Canal+, Astro, and SingTel Innov8, the indication being that as Maker had built a strong footprint in online video in the US, it was now looking to do the same overseas. The company says it has content creators in more than 100 countries, and 60% of its viewership comes from outside the US. With Rechtman’s appointment, Maker will now be able to “localize its approach” in key markets, led by someone who’s experienced in dealing with brands and agencies on a global scale.
Rechtman had joined AOL when his branded content company, Goviral, was acquired by AOL. Goviral specialized in distributing branded video content on the web and had client list that included brands like Samsung, BMW, and LG, to agencies like Publicis and Omnicom.
As part of his deal to join Maker Studios’ executive team, Rechtman is also making an investment in the company.
