When inebriation is an integral part of your entertainment, you’ve got to do some advance planning to avoid turning a web show into a shit-show. Hart does this by including some pre-written jokes in every episode of “You Deserve a Drink.” However, outside of the prepared lines, Hart is “essentially…just riffing.”
To kick off the actual filming of the show, Hart and her co-‘Tuber, Grace Helbig, have a “pre-game cocktail” and think of a few more jokes before getting up, performing the intro, and making the drink. The YouTube women then “shoot jokes for the next 15 minutes or so,” with the ultimate goal, according to Hart, of getting Helbig to “break behind the camera.” A laughing Helbig has been around for many episodes of the literally intoxicating web series.
Strategic timing is key to the themes of Hart’s regular show. Rhett & Link were surprised to learn that Hart and Helbig will sometimes shoot more than one show in a sitting. “If it’s a pop culture [episode] I’m obviously going to shoot it the week of [the pop culture event],” Hart explained. Same goes for holidays and other special events. “You can kind of tell how many we shot in a day by my level of drunkness,” Hart said. Three shows in a day, though, can be a tricky endeavor. Hart admitted to “baby number three” being an, uh, interesting performing experience.
Since the shooting occurs at Hart’s apartment, the show doles out the most cash on its main star — alcohol. Hart even gets a tax write-off for the liquor she uses on the web show, either an amazing or dangerous job perk.
Constant creativity is important for any YouTube series, and Hart’s goes into coming up with a new drink for each episode. As a former bartender, Hart does this by “using [her] base knowledge and then jumping off traditional drinks, or just making ones up and seeing if they taste good.”
