Amazon has denied a report that said it’s working on a Hulu-like free, ad-supporting video streaming service.
Yesterday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Amazon was mulling an ad-supported streaming service that would exist independently of its existing Prime Instant Video subscription. This service would be aimed a streaming Amazon’s original programming, as well as a variety of licensed programming and music video.
On the music front, the report also suggested a unique video-commerce set-up in which ad-supported music videos would be made available to consumers on Amazon’s website whenever they were searching for that artist. (For instance: When you search for Drake or Lady Gaga on the site, you’ll get the option to watch a music video from said artist.)
A free, premium streaming service such as the one described by The Journal would certainly shake up the online video market — especially since Amazon is planning to unveil a new connected-TV gadget next week. Imagine if a free video service was included on that device, with unique e-commerce capabilities developed by Amazon.
Certainly something interesting to think about for consumers, brands, and competitors alike. Unfortunately, Amazon says it’s not true. Per a spokesperson:
“We’re often experimenting with new things, but we have no plans to offer a free streaming-media service.”
