Amazon has finally unveiled how it plans to play in the home-entertainment business. The company showed off the new Fire TV device this morning, which Amazon VP Peter Larsen said is faster, simpler, and more open than rival products from Roku, Apple, and Google.
Squashing some rumors that the device would be a USB-sized stick in the vein of Chromecast and the Roku Streaming Stick, the Fire TV is actually a set-top, but a really light one (thinner than a dime, said Larsen).
Built on top of Amazon’s version of the Android operating system, Fire TV will offer access to many of the top online video services, including Amazon Prime Instant Video (obviously), Netflix, Hulu Plus, VEVO, Crackle, Vimeo, and YouTube, as well as video apps from media companies like Showtime, ESPN, Major League Baseball, and the NBA.
The device costs $99, available immediately.
