Why did Disney buy Maker Studios? It’s the 500-million-dollar question (or, potentially, a 950-million-dollar question). According to Disney chairman and CEO Bob Iger (who had an on-screen cameo at the beginning of Maker’s first Newfront last night), Disney sees Maker as a marketing and distribution vehicle.

In addition to Maker.TV and a couple of tech and services for advertisers, Maker Studios has also unveiled a selection of its upcoming programming at the company’s first Newfront. The Newfronts slate features an array of original series that Maker Studios has a hand in producing — part of an initiative to build out IP and a brand that Maker owns. These shows include the previously announced “Ithamar Has Nothing to Say” with comedians Key & Peele and Principato-Young Entertainment and “Oh, You Pretty Things!” with Nylon TV.
Can the internet make TV less boring?
On a warm night in New York last week, advertisers and content producers huddled together into a huge white tent beside the Metropolitan Opera House to watch Yahoo unveil its first TV-length original web series. Purple lights and plastic champagne flutes were everywhere, and everyone in attendance seemed to know that Yahoo’s event on Monday, along with about a dozen others that would occur that week, was part of the start of something huge. Yahoo was there to cap off the first night of the annual NewFronts, a series of causally linked events where new media companies attempt to woo advertisers and producers with their platforms and shows — and critically, do so just weeks before traditional TV networks host similar events of their own.

YouTube Smashes Facebook When it Comes to Brand Engagement
For the longest time, Facebook has been one of the go-to social media networks for brands to grow, and connect with, an audience who are receptive to their products or services. But, over the past few months, the organic reach that brands and other Facebook Page owners have has steadily declined to single figures. Why? Because Facebook wants you to pay to reach as many eyeballs as possible, and it’s not about to give you that access for free anymore. DHX’s YouTube Advertising Adds to Digital Momentum
DHX Media Ltd. (DHX), the largest independent producer and distributor of children’s shows, said advertising revenue from YouTube viewing is surging. Interest for DHX’s 300 shows including “Caillou” and “Strawberry Shortcake” is growing through video-on-demand services such as Netflix Inc. (NFLX) and three DHX subscription channels onGoogle Inc. (GOOG)’s YouTube. Revenue from advertising tied to videos on YouTube is “the emerging story,” said DHX Media Chief Executive Officer Michael Donovan.
