Legendary Entertainment, the studio behind blockbuster films such as “Inception,” “The Dark Knight,” and this summer’s “Godzilla,” is adapting Capcom’s hit gaming franchise “Dead Rising” as a feature-length digital film.
The studio has sold the domestic film rights to Crackle. It will be the first release to come out of Legendary’s digital division, but the third “original digital” film to be available on Crackle, which previously produced the Danny Glover-starring “Extraction” and is currently working on the Jeremy Renner-produced “The Throwaways.”
“Dead Rising,” a gaming franchise that’s sold more than 6.5 million copies worldwide, takes place during a large-scale zombie apocalypse. When a mandatory government-issued vaccine fails to stop the outbreak, the four main characters are forced to evade the disease — and those already infected by it. While the characters attempt to uncover the cause of the outbreak, the narrative will play up the role of politics, media coverage, and public paranoia.
Legendary and Crackle haven’t set a release date yet for the feature, which will be written by Tim Carter.
Carter is also producing the film, alongside Tomas Harlan under their Contradiction Films banner. (Contradiction previously produced “Mortal Kombat: Legacy,” a digital series based on the popular gaming franchise that ran for two seasons on Machinima.) Lorenzo di Bonaventura (“Transformers”) is executive producing.
While Crackle has exclusive domestic rights to “Dead Rising,” Content Media will handle international sales. The distributor, which also holds international rights to “Halo 4: Forward Unto Dawn” and “Street Fighter: Assassin’s Fist,” will package “Dead Rising” in both feature-length and episodic formats. Domestically, the film will also be released on SVOD, DVD, VOD, and TV following its run on Crackle.
