On Sunday night, 15-year-old Mendes released his first EP. In less than 40 minutes, it climbed its way to number one on iTunes with the help of the almost 26,000 people watching his live stream of the album, whom he asked to help “get this bad boy to number one.”
Mendes’s request that fans tweet “#ShawnToNumber1” worked, with the particular hashtag trending at the top of Twitter, thanks to the Vine star’s 1.5 million followers. (Meanwhile, he boasts about 2.9 million on the six-second video app.)
The live stream included about 30 minutes worth of the four songs available on Mendes’s EP. He is signed by Island Records and has had a previous song, “Life of the Party,” come out at number 24 on the Billboard’s Hot 100 chart.
Mendes gained recognition for his Vine-sized covers of songs by the likes of Justin Bieber. He is currently on tour with The Vamps, Austin Mahone, and Fifth Harmony.
