Amazon Studios Head Roy Price on Competing With Netflix, Xbox Studios’ Demise (Q&A)
Roy Price comes from a long line of Hollywood executives. His father, Frank Price, was president of Universal Pictures in the 1980s and his grandfather, Roy Huggins, co-created The Rockford Files. “We would watch dailies sometimes at home on Sunday night,” he says. “You had to have a projector and a projectionist come over to your house to turn it on.”

Aereo, the embattled Web TV startup, says it hasn’t thrown in the towel in the wake of its Supreme Court defeat. But the company’s primary backer seems less convinced. IAC, which bet on Aereo early, has written down at least a portion of its investment in the startup.
Call of Duty and X-Men Top YouTube Trailers Leaderboard
Before the game, before the series, before the film, there’s always some kind of preview to entice viewers into tuning in at a later date. These trailers (if done right) represent entertainment in and of themselves. Some gain plenty of traction, as represented in the YouTube Trailers Leaderboard. Taking into account video content uploaded between April 1 and June 30 of this year, the top ten most viewed trailers list accounts for a total of 98 million views and 160 minutes of watch time.
Filmmaker Competition Ends in YouTube Space LA with Uma Thurman
The Jameson First Shot competition gives three, unknown filmmakers a chance to write and direct their own screenplays to be produced by Kevin Spacey’s Trigger Street Productions, now for three years running. Sponsored by Jameson Irish Whiskey and Spacey’s production company, the competition also lets the winners direct a Hollywood star in their video shorts. In the competition’s first year in 2012, Spacey himself starred, with Willem Dafoe taking the leading roles in 2013.
Twitter VS YouTube?
Somewhat lost in Twitter’s solid earnings report late Tuesday was a comment from the company’s new CMO Anthony Noto that Twitter will soon roll out a new promoted video product. While details are scarce, Twitter is hinting that brands and media companies will be able to upload videos, build organic audiences for them on Twitter, and then pay to promote them with ads. Sounds like this could position Twitter as a YouTube competitor.

Three of this week’s clips on Adweek/VidIQ’s top 10 branded video chart come from Brazilian marketers that sell hair care products and smartphones, showing that brands don’t necessarily need to churn out the jaw-dropping content that video-savvy brands like Red Bull and GoPro are known for to keep viewers hooked.
Why is YouTube Blocking This Family Friendly Viral Video?
Late last week, I wrote a story entitled, “VidAngel to Clean-Up Streaming Movies and YouTube for Families.” Although I said that VidAngel’s video entitled, “This Poor Family Gets Shot with 3,192 Paintballs in 5.3 Seconds to Prove a Powerful Point,” was “controversial,” I put controversial in quotations marks. In fact, I also said, “the paintball video is one of few videos that you can share on Facebook with your friends, parents, siblings, and colleagues. Heck, you can even share this “controversial” video with nuns, the elderly, and your uncle Steve. Hey, when was the last time you could do that?”
