Netflix has officially ordered “The Crown,” a historical series that follows the reign of Queen Elizabeth II in England from the moment she first learns of her powerful position. The show, which will consist of 10 episodes, is scheduled to premiere in all Netflix territories in 2016.
This follows initial buzz of Netflix acquiring the series back in May, making it now the second historical drama to appear on the streaming service (“Marco Polo” being the first) and the first Netflix original series that’s based in the UK.
Inspired by the play “The Audience” by Peter Morgan, “The Crown” will be written by Morgan and directed by Stephen Daldry, both of whom have been nominated for Academy Awards. Andy Harries (who worked on Morgan’s “The Queen,” featuring the same subject) will produce.
Morgan, Daldry, and Harries will also executive produce the historical drama, as will Robert Fox and Matthew Byam Shaw. Left Bank Pictures and Sony Pictures Television will produce.
