David Cross of “Arrested Development” plans to distribute his new film, “Hits,” via BitTorrent.
Though the dark comedy about fame in the internet age premiered at Sundance in 2014, February 13, 2015, will mark its wide release date via BitTorrent’s Bundle to audiences who will be able to pay what they want to watch. Yes, upon downloading the Bundle that includes “Hits,” users can choose to pay whatever they wish for the content.
This harkens back to Radiohead’s release of “In Rainbows” through the pay-what-you-want model in 2007. Radiohead actually inspired Cross to release “Hits” via BitTorrent Bundle, as did Louis CK’s use of the direct-to-viewer distribution site Humble Bundle. “The Interview”’s recent success with online distribution sets additional precedent for this method to succeed.
As well as distributing online, Cross started a Kickstarter with the aim of getting “Hits” into theaters. The Kickstarter has a goal of $100,000 and still has about a month left to go (it’s raised over $33,000 so far). Even in theaters, Cross plans to stick to the pay-what-you-want model.
The cast of “Hits” includes Amy Sedaris, Matt Walsh, Meredith Hagner, Wyatt Cenac, Michael Cera, David Koechner, Amy Carlson, and Jason Ritter.
