Popcornflix, a movie streaming service from Screen Media Ventures, just reached the 10 million download mark.
The free, ad-supported streaming service offers users thousands of movie titles and TV series that range in genre but mostly fall within the indie/cult label. Meanwhile, related apps FrightPix and Popcornflix Kids specialize in certain genres (made obvious by their names), the latter of which launched recently, in December 2014, and includes shows like the cartoon “Popeye.”
Also as of December, Popcornflix became available on Xbox One in the US and Canada. The service is also available for free download on Roku, Android and iOS devices, Windows 8, Google TV, and Samsung and Panasonic Smart TVs all over the world.
As David Fannon, the EVP at Popcornflix, explained, “Our streaming service has become a popular choice in a relatively short time because we offer people access to great movies and TV shows, all for free.” The service also stands out because its movies lie further off the beaten track than those featured on the likes of Netflix. Just take a look at its website and see how few of the movies you recognize.
