Reuters believes enough people are willing to pay a small amount to access news videos on their smartphones. The news organization has launched Reuters TV for the iPhone, which will offer news clips produced by Reuters, for less than two bucks per month.
The mobile video news service is aimed at a “growing segment of informed, mobile, and globally engaged consumers in their 30s and 40s,” who seek out news content but don’t have the time to watch it via traditional news outlets, according to Reuters. “The way we consume TV and hear about news has changed,” said Isaac Showman, managing director of Reuters TV, in a statement. “Reuters TV is news for the Netflix age: it’s individually relevant, on-demand, and up-to date.”
Designed for those on the go, Reuters TV functions as two video services. “Reuters Now” is a news program that pulls together clips of varying lengths (anywhere from 5 to 30 minutes), curated to fit the interests and location of the viewer. All of the content on “Reuters Now” is on demand, updated frequently, and downloadable for offline viewing.
Then there are the live feeds, which will offer on-the-ground coverage of major global events — from protests to political speeches. This content will also be available on-demand for later viewing.
Editorial content within Reuters TV will be produced exclusively for the service, and sourced from the news organization’s network of 2,500 journalists embedded in over 160 countries, Reuters said. All of the content will have multiple versions, and will be organized by teams in London, Hong Kong, New York, and Washington DC.
Right now, Reuters TV for the iPhone is only available to users in the US and UK. At launch, subscribers can access a free 30-day trial, followed by a $1.49 (£1.99) per month in-app subscription. The service will contain “limited, premium” advertising.
