HBO is moving forward with “Insecure,” a half-hour comedy series pilot from the creator of the critically acclaimed web series “The Misadventures of Awkward Black Girl,” Issa Rae.
Co-created by Rae and Larry Wilmore (“The Daily Show,” “The Nightly Show”), “Insecure” will follow the awkward experiences and racy tribulations of a modern-day African American woman, who will be played by Rae. The pilot is co-written by Rae and Wilmore.
In this way, the series will be similar to the project that Rae is best known for. “Awkward Black Girl,” which netted Rae a Shorty Award, is currently available on her YouTube channel, which has more than 186,000 subscribers and more than 20 million lifetime views. A book based on the web series is coming out on February 10.
“Insecure” will be produced by 3 Arts Entertainment, with Rae and Wilmore also executive producing alongside Michael Rotenberg, Dave Becky, and Jonathan Berry. A director and showrunner have not been named yet.
